An empirically based practical learning progression for generalisation, an essential element of algebraic reasoning

Generalisation is a key feature of learning algebra, requiring all four proficiency strands the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (AC:M): Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. From review literature, we propose progression for algebraic generalisation consisting five levels. Our then elaborated validated by reference to large range assessment tasks acquired from previous project Reframing Mathematical Futures II (RMFII). In RMFII project, Rasch modelling responses over 5000 high school students (Years 7–10) algebra led development Learning Progression Algebraic Reasoning (LPAR). in more specific than LPAR, coherent regarding generalisation, enabling teachers locate students’ performances within target their teaching. addition, selection appropriate teaching resources marking rubrics used provided each level progression.
